Dream Baby Dream

28/07/26

I have hands I never use; I have a voice I hardly hear

Only on the phone, only when it lags

Only in that brief moment of half disgust, half astonishment

Wow. What a sound I make

I am a baby, afraid only of falling

And loud noises

But it’s not true

I have a feeling it’s not true anymore

When you tug on my sleeve and I want to kill you

before you do

Need me, come after me, milk me

For what it’s worth, I’m worth nearly nothing now

Probably less than you, so I

Don’t know what else to say, don’t know

Why you do what you do

Like good company, I am cost efficient; I come after the fact

And the fact is

You’re tactless and I’m secretly brilliant

Some day that spotlight is going to

Dash your hopes and fuck me sideways

Until I’m finally famous, or at the very least pregnant

With somebody’s child

That would be enough, probably

To keep me satisfied or at the very least

Alive, somebody to look after

Is that why you do what you do?

There used to be love in you

Nobody felt it but me, but it was festering there

Below the surface; a great ugly, glistening crack

In the sidewalk of my life

I thought I could help you, but it was May

I was miserable enough and

Dream Baby Dream was playing

And all these excuses hardly matter now, but

They matter to me: I might be worth an apology

There used to be love in you

I guess there might still be
